“The Router Blinked the Same as Always — It Just Wasn’t Only Working for Us Anymore”: Understanding a Zombie Device

In cybersecurity, a “zombie” isn’t dramatic or obvious — it’s simply a device that’s been quietly taken over and put to work for someone else, all while continuing to function completely normally for its actual owner. Your internet still works. Your smart device still does what you expect. In the background, though, it may also be following someone else’s remote instructions entirely.

What makes zombie devices a slow-building, easy-to-overlook risk is exactly that normalcy. There’s no dramatic crash, no obvious sign, often for a very long time. A device recruited this way years ago may still be quietly working today, and the person paying its electric bill would have no particular reason to suspect anything at all.

Here’s the everyday comparison: imagine a car that, unbeknownst to you, gets quietly borrowed overnight by someone with a spare key, driven somewhere, and returned to your driveway before morning, refueled, with the odometer reset. You’d never notice from the driveway. You might notice, eventually, from something subtler — the car running a little rougher than it used to, for reasons you can’t quite place. That subtle wear is often the only clue a zombie device gives its actual owner.


Steps that are genuinely within reach, no expertise required:

1.          Restart your router and any smart home devices periodically — this alone can disrupt certain kinds of non-persistent infections, the same way a car running better after a service isn’t magic, just maintenance.


2.          Check that your router and smart devices are receiving updates, and if a device is old enough that it no longer gets them, consider replacing it, particularly if it’s been in service for many years without a single update.


3.          Notice unexplained slowdowns rather than dismissing them. A device that’s suddenly sluggish for no clear reason is worth a second look, even if it turns out to be nothing.


4.          Ask a family member or a trusted local tech service to do a simple check of your home network once a year, the same way you’d have a furnace or a car inspected — not because something is definitely wrong, but because regular maintenance is how small things get caught early.


There’s nothing to be embarrassed about here. These devices are specifically built and marketed as simple, plug-and-forget conveniences — the forgetting is the point, for the manufacturer and, unfortunately, for anyone hoping to quietly borrow them too. A little regular attention is all it takes to stay ahead of it.
